Fifteen years ago, MozFest began as a grassroots event and has since grown into a global movement for a healthier internet. These milestones mark the evolution and impact of a festival dedicated to creating a more inclusive digital world.

Timeline

Finding Our Rhythm
2010

The first MozFest wasn’t technically a MozFest. Instead, it was the Drumbeat Festival, a convening of leaders making radical disruptions in learning and in web technology.
London Calling
2011

Along with the change in cities came a change in name, and the Mozilla Festival was solidified as a gathering place for Mozilla’s global network.
Generation of Webmakers
2012

MozFest’s third year marked the rise of the maker spirit. We invested more in nurturing grassroots innovators doing incredible work in their communities.
Less Yack, More Hack
2013

Passionate thinkers and inventors from around the world met to learn from each other and help forge the future of the web. The maker vibe had truely taken off.
Teach the Web
2014

Web literacy and access took center stage. MozFest became a platform for app-makers, artists, and educators to push boundaries and inspire.
Collaborative Curation
2015

MozFest responded to growing threats to digital rights, with the community coming together to co-create a festival focused on safety, privacy, and the future of the open web.
Immersive Experiences
2016

Storytelling and art became central to MozFest, with MozEx and Dialogues & Debates creating spaces that sparked inspiration and collaboration through creativity.
Introducing House
2017

MozFest expanded with MozFest House, offering a new space for focused discussions on internet health with our partners and allies.
Making It Personal
2018

Ethical AI and data privacy became personal missions. MozFest wove these themes into every corner, making the fight for the web a shared journey.
Goodbye London
2019

MozFest’s 10th anniversary celebrated Healthy AI and bid a reflective farewell to its London home, setting sights on the future.
The New Normal
2021

When connection was needed most, MozFest shifted to a virtual format, uniting over 10,000 participants across 12 days of community-led experiences.
A Café with a Conscience
2022

In Manchester, England, the Ethical Dilemma Café served up free coffee, but only if patrons were willing to pay with their personal data.
Nairobi Welcomes MozFest
2023

Nairobi, Kenya, became the first African city to host MozFest House, sparking vital discussions on AI and digital rights in East and Southern Africa.

Open By Design

The Mozilla Festival story began in Barcelona, Spain, at a gathering then called the Drumbeat Festival. It was a convening making radical disruptions in learning and web technology by ripping out the seams of traditional methods to open up processes, projects, and platforms for more transparency and collaboration.

Keeping to these roots, the way we plan and produce the festival today is centered around ensuring the platforms, schedule, and where we meet together is as open and accessible as possible.

As our community co-creates the festival together, the open platforms we choose empower us as a movement towards a stronger, unified future in the digital world.

By The Community for The Community

While Mozilla provides a basic structure, resources, and support, the festival is primarily designed and produced by volunteers — teams of educators, activists, engineers, artists, and researchers who care about the open web and a healthy internet.

Everyone who engages with the MozFest community experiences something memorable and impactful: new collaborations and ideas for implementation in their day-to-day work and friends for life.
