In the year of 2024 where half the world is going to the polls, safeguarding the integrity of elections is a paramount concern for democracies worldwide. This panel delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by mis and disinformation in electoral processes and explores strategies for promoting fairness, transparency, and accountability.

The deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies during war and military conflict presents complex challenges related to accountability. This panel explores the ethical, legal, and practical dimensions of holding AI systems accountable during times of conflict. From autonomous weapons systems to decision-making algorithms, the use of AI raises critical questions about responsibility, transparency, and the protection of human rights.

Members of the Royal Shakespeare Company presented an amazing theatre performance, unique to Mozfest that happened both live and online. Join Sarah Ellis (Director of Digital Development), Ruthie Doyle (RSC Digital Associate) and James Turnbull (Digital Producer) for a provocation on how and why a theatre company are re-engineering their model to meet the needs of the future.

The panel’s composition is an ensemble of journalists and researchers whose work has challenged institutions of power, and probed people to question, who has power over AI and who doesn’t? They’ve pushed the envelope of “traditional tech news” beyond who is wielding its power, to who is on the margins of these developments, and who are the underdogs breaking the mold. Speakers will delve into how to shift the narrative about AI and how to foster plurality of perspectives about the AI ecosystem.

The rapid expansion of data infrastructures, including data centers, telecommunications networks, and cloud computing, presents a growing challenge to global efforts to combat climate change and preserve natural ecosystems. This panel examines the trade-offs between digital expansion and environmental conservation.

The Data Future Labs (DFL) Showcase features global builders developing community-focused data tools and platforms. In June 2024, at MozFest House Amsterdam, we highlighted projects from our network that emphasize data stewardship and Trustworthy AI, aiming to shift the narrative and empower communities in the AI age. We seek to support a global outlook on Data Futures and connect with funders ready to invest in these initiatives.

Firefox attended MozFest House in Amsterdam and had a blast connecting, building, and celebrating with the community—after all, Firefox turns 20 years young this year! The product team ran a design sprint session on the future of the Web, hosted a coffee & chat with students from local universities, and showcased exciting new feature demos. Foxy even made an appearance or two…and brought plenty of merch to share.

Created by Jessica Jabr, this installation paralleled mycelium networks and AI, highlighting connectivity, adaptability, and collaboration. Amid ambient sounds, participants interacted with generative visuals on sinewave panels and myco-foam bricks, which showcased eco-sustainable building possibilities and served as both visual displays and audio insulators.

Created by Anne Lee Steele, this installation explored the complexity of global supply chains through two types of maps: physical and digital. A tactile, auditory experience used a standing globe with electric paint to trigger sounds from different supply chain steps, such as mining, manufacturing, shipping, waste, and recycling, when touched.

It was warm and busy, so the Ethical Dilemma Cafe at MozFest House Amsterdam was the perfect spot for a break and a popsicle in the Netherlands sunshine. Free ice pops—what's not to love? At the Ethical Dilemma Cafe in the Tolhuis, not everything was as free as it seemed as we explored the dilemmas faced online every day.
